Other times, it happens so slowly we don't realize how much has changed until we no longer recognize where we are.
Loss. Trauma. Relationships. Disappointment. Difficult choices. Unexpected change.
The event may end, but what happened inside us because of it can stay with us for years.
It can change the way we think. The way we trust. The choices we make. The people we allow close. Even the way we see ourselves.
Understanding what happened isn't about staying in the past.
It's about recognizing how the past may still be showing up in your life today.
Because when we understand where we've been and what it changed within us, we can begin making different choices about where we go next.
You can't change what happened.
But you can understand it.
And understanding can change what happens next.
On my birthday in 2011, my 31-year-old daughter, Lilly, left my home after spending the day celebrating with our family.
She never made it home.
A drunk driver entered the highway going the wrong way. In one moment, there was the life I knew before — and the life I had no idea how to live after.
For years, I thought surviving the loss was the challenge.
Eventually, I began to understand there was another one:
Understanding what the loss had done to me.
That understanding didn't erase what happened or require me to leave Lilly behind.
It helped me understand who I had become — and eventually discover that grief and life could exist together.
That's where much of what I share today began.

Life changes us.
Sometimes suddenly.
Sometimes slowly.
Sometimes in ways we never imagined.
